Among the benefits Hilary enjoys as a college professor is the occassional–every 7 years or so–academic sabbatical. Having not taken advantage of this perk in over 10 years, we were well primed for an adventure. Thanks to a six-week posting in Canberra, Australia last summer we had the opportunity to sample ex-pat life with the kids. We all loved it and, thus, plans were made for a year-long visit abroad.
Hilary has several colleagues in London with similar, academic research agendas. Through these colleagues she was able to arrange for an invitation to sit as a visitor in the University College, London Economics Department. Aside from the strong professional connections here, London is an ideal location for professional and personal forays to the rest of Europe and, in fact, most of the world. This is an asset we hope to take full advantage of.
Thanks to a Berkeley friend, David Daniels, we’ve established a blog to keep in touch with friends and family back in the States. Given the ease and affordability of e-mail and international phone service(thank you Vonage!) our blog may serve as more of a diary for us than pure communication, but it’s also a convenient way to broadcast news about our lives to those who care to follow along.
We’ll do our best to post regularly with accounts of daily life, travel tales or brief musings. Please feel free to pose questions or add comments as you feel inspired.
If any of you have plans to swing through London, please contact us through this blog, our regular e-mail addresses, or our Berkeley phone number. We’d love to have visitors.
Cheers!
